Despite some excellent Mexican performance all over the pitch yesterday afternoon in Forteleza, one man stole the headlines and now appears to have a very big future. Guillermo Ochoa was the hero of Mexico and the bain of Brazil as his unbelievable performance denied the hosts another World Cup victory. For a guy who has been playing for Ajaccio in France, is now a free agent and was, for many not the first choice Mexican keeper, it is a meteoric rise.
At 28, Ochoa is entering his prime years but, as a goalkeeper, could see him perform at a high level for a great many seasons. For the past couple of years, Ochoa has been staring for Ajaccio in France but following their relegation and his contract expiring he is now free to look for pastures new this summer.
The Mexican number one had previously said, “My priority is to stay in France, but I am open to any propositions. I have improved in the last three years, most notably in handling the pace of games.
“But I was used to top competition when I played in Mexico. I now need to play in the Champions League to be sure of my level.”
A link to Marseille was reported but this was pre-Brazil, before the world stood up and noticed. In less than 24 hours, the name of Ochoa was trending on Twitter around the globe and inevitably the transfer rumours have begun.
Arsenal and Liverpool have already been linked with a move and Barcelona had also previously seen Ochoa as a possible backup keeper. A free agent of Ochoa’s calibre is obviously going to attract a lot of interest and it will certainly not be limited just to France.
Mexico now appear to have found their number one after some discussion and hopefully a Champions League level European side will also have a new number one soon.
