New Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has quashed speculation linking star Lionel Messi with a move away from the club, and suggested contract talks are imminent.
Messi penned a new contract only last February which was intended to keep him to the club until 2018, but the Spanish giants are willing to open discussions now with the 26 year old to keep him even longer.
Recent speculation has linked Messi with a move away due to an apparent unhappy Argentine being uneasy with the contract handed to Brazilian superstar Neymar, and suitors such as big spending Paris St-Germain or Manchester City were mentioned. However the Barca president has warned off all clubs insisting Messi is not for sale.
Meanwhile another Barca superstar, Xavi, has dismissed talk of him leaving the Catalan club and feels he still has plenty of offering the club. Xavi is a one club man having been at Barca his whole footballing career, with a contract until 2016 when he turns 36.
Xavi has been linked with big money moves to the MLS or Qatari leagues but has insisted he will remain in Barcelona until at least 2016, finishing his career at the club he loves.
Elsewhere former Real Madrid ‘keeper Antonio Adán has joined strugglers Betis after being released by Cagliari of Italy. The keeper made the headlines last winter when Jose Mourinho controversially opted to pick Adnan ahead of Iker Casillas.
