Hibernian has confirmed two new signings for the start of the 2013-14 season. Former St Johnstone and QPR striker Rowan Vine and the re-signing for the 3rd time of former club captain and youth product Kevin Thomson.
Vine who spent just one season at St Johnstone making 37 appearances and scoring seven times and helping the Saints to a third place finish in the SPL before penning the deal at Easter Road told the club’s website – “I’m delighted to sign for Hibs – I’ve spent the past few days training at the club and I’ve enjoyed every single minute of it.
“As soon as the opportunity came up, I wanted to take it because it’s clear to me this is a club heading in the right direction and I want to be part of it.
“I enjoyed playing in Scotland last season and when my time at St Johnstone came to an end I was keen to stay in the league.
“So when the chance came to sign for a club like Hibs with its fanbase, stadium and set-up then I was really keen to get the deal done.”
Meanwhile, the other recruit is a familiar one Thomson who spent seven years at the club before being made club captain by then manager Tony Mowbray and then moving for £2 million to giants Rangers in January 2007 where he won two SPL titles, two League cups and one Scottish cup also appearing in the UEFA Cup Final in 2008 was a firm favourite with the fans.
After a injury ravaged spell at Championship side Middlesbrough, Thomson signed a short-term contract last season and is delighted to have agreed to stay on at his boyhood club as he told their official website: “I’m really pleased to have agreed a deal – I always wanted to stay here. There were other offers on the table from clubs down south, but I knocked them back because I had my mind set on staying with Hibs.
“I’m aiming to get back to my best and to play consistently well for Hibs. I’ve really enjoyed pre-season so far and playing in the friendly in Gibraltar.
“We’ve got a good group of boys here and I want to play my part in helping to drive the club forward.”
Hibees boss Pat Fenlon is delighted to have added the two experienced players to his squad: “Throughout the summer, we have worked hard to identify and recruit the right players for Hibs, so we could strengthen the squad and move forward.
“Both Kevin and Rowan are exactly what we need – quality players with plenty of experience.
“Overall, we’ve got a young group of players and, with their combined experience, Kevin and Rowan will play a big part in the continued development of our squad.”
Both players will be registered in time to play in the clubs upcoming Europa League qualifier against Swedish side Malmo FF.
Elsewhere St Johnstone moved swiftly to replace Vine by bringing in New Zealand International Rory Fallon from fellow SPL side Aberdeen.
The 31 year-old has signed a one-year deal with Derek McInnes’s side he is the one of a number if new recruits made by the Dons this off-season which include former Celtic and Dundee United midfielders Willo Flood and Barry Robson and former Trotter Gregg Wylde.
