PSV Eindhoven’s Dutch international striker Jermain Lens has been fined €7,500 for his behaviour after Sunday’s 2-1 away Eredivisie defeat to Feyenoord.
Lens was waiting for Feyenoord’s experience defender Joris Mathijsen to arrive in the tunnel yesterday to give him a a piece of his mind for an incident that had taken place on the pitch. Mathijsen was not willing to listen and walked away, after which Lens grabbed his shirt. This resulted into pushing and shoving, with players of PSV and Feyenoord getting involved, in an attempt to prevent escalation.
PSV released a statement stating that “Lens is fully aware that he has brought discredit on the club and himself.”
Lens has meanwhile offered his apologies to club officials and his team-mates. PSV imposed the maximum fine on Lens, which is to be donated to a public charity and the player has accepted the punishment. Although Lens has yet to hear if he will recieved further punishment from the Dutch FA, it is expected.
